While we were there we worked with children from
the community of Matero. This community (or
slum) is outside of the capital of Lusaka, where we stayed. The living conditions there are terrible and
disease is prevalent. Most homes are
about 100 sq. feet and have several people of all ages living in them. Almost all of the children living in Matero are
not in school and lack proper nutrition. They are often left unattended during the day
while their parents try to find work. It
was heartbreaking to see considering most of our pets have better living
conditions than these children do.
